Company description:: Olympique Lyonnais and Adaël Wireless are pleased to announce the unveiling of a new FREE WI-FI service end users and patrons of Gerland soccer stadium (40,000 seats). Designed primarily to serve the stadium’s hospitality and VIP facilities, this service will enable people to connect to the Internet without wires and free of charge in order to access all the information they require in real time (results of other games, possibility to send and receive e-mails, etc.).
The Olympique Lyonnais football team chose Adaël’s free usage solution rather than a card-based fee-paying solution because of its simplicity. The installation of the system was carried out with the help of NC Numericable, ISP, and the Municipality of Lyon, who were in charge of technical co-ordination on site. The deployment of this new service provides a renewed opportunity for Olympique Lyonnais to affirm its commitment to new technology. WI-FI is an excellent example of new technology harnessed being used to improve people’s day-to-day lives, since it enables them to access data with the greatest of convenience. This service will also be welcomed by journalists who until now have been compelled to use standalone, low-bandwidth ISDN lines. Thanks to the new high-bandwidth WI-FI service, they will be able to transmit photographs and copy to their editors in real time. A total of eight 100mW Colubris access points have been installed across the stadium to provide complete coverage. Connecting to the service could not be simpler, particularly for users equipped with Windows XP which automatically detects the presence of WI-FI signal. All it takes is a notebook computer powered by a Centrino processor or equipped with a Wireless LAN WIFI PCMCIA card. As soon as users launch their Internet browser, an introductory page appears with a video or message from Olympique Lyonnais heralding the free service.
With the Olympique Lyonnais project, Adaël has introduced a new HOTSPOT business model at last viable for small WISP (wireless Internet service provider). This innovative concept is not known to exist just yet. An advertisement in the form of a ‘TV ad’ (.avi, .wmf or Flash file) appears just before the user can access the service. Adaël’s BackOffice application can be used to manage and push these ads for each site individually where the HOTSPOT is been deployed. It also features a secure internet access enabling the owner of the HOTSPOT to manage the adds, company image or self promotion messages... Service outages are detected and dealt with in real time remotely from Paris.
