Auction-Tech Designs Award-Winning Online Cattle Auction
Progressive Format Honored at Flash™ Film Festival in San Francisco
(Portland, Ore.) – A Web-based cattle auction created by Auction-Tech of
Portland, Ore., was recently awarded first place in the “Application” category at the 2004
Flash™ Film Festival in San Francisco, March 3-5. Auction-Tech created the
revolutionary “live” software platform for the winning site, www.stampedecattle.com,
the home of online livestock marketer Superior Stampede. The site was recognized as the
most innovative and original application developed in Macromedia Flash. Winners in 16
categories were recognized at the Festival, showcasing the nation’s best Web work using
Macromedia Flash technology.
“Superior Stampede’s auction stands apart because it incorporates a lot of the
new Flash technology on the back-end allowing for interactive animation, streaming
video and audio as well as server side applications,” said Drew Falkman, president of
Auction-Tech. “It is also presented in a very dynamic, novelty format. Technical experts
were impressed by the distinctive interface saying that if this is possible with cattle
auctions, what next?”
Auction-Tech focuses entirely on developing live auctions that function in realtime
as opposed to several days. The company’s auction platform is especially unique in
that it emulates the exciting, fast paced atmosphere of a real auction to benefit both
sellers and buyers. Superior Stampede’s auction features photographs and data for each
group of cattle, creative animation, a shot clock, live auctioneer and interactive bidding.
It was recently refined to better showcase cattle and features a live demo for visitors to
experience the technology firsthand.
The functionality of the auction speaks for itself. Since launching live, real-time
auctions in 2003, Superior Stampede has sold up to 30,000 head of cattle per month to a
base of nearly 4,000 buyers nationwide. Chris Nelson, business manager of Superior
Stampede added, “One of our biggest challenges was making sure the audio and bidding
would run in real-time for a range of users with varying connection speeds. We’ve been
able to accomplish this by minimizing data exchange so that it’s fast and fair to all
participants. It’s an example of a successful, but practical technology application that has
served the livestock industry well.”
Falkman started his company in 1998 when he created the livestock industry’s
first real-time auction for Superior Stampede’s predecessor, Cattlesale.com. His
technology platform consists of three primary components: 1) the client in Flash™ that
participants use; 2) a real-time engine for streaming audio, bidding and video; and 3) a
database and administrative tool containing reporting tools, user and product information.
